In 1681, the County of Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda applied a countermark to circulating 24 Mariengroschen pieces originally struck under Max Gandolf von Kuenburg, the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. The countermarking practice was a common fiscal tool among small German territories unable to mint sufficient coinage of their own — by validating foreign silver with an official stamp, the county could regulate what circulated within its borders and, in some cases, adjust the implied exchange rate to its advantage.
Zöttl 2088.212 is among the more obscure entries in the Bentheim-Tecklenburg series. The host coin's Salzburg origin and the applying authority's remoteness from that mint make for an unusual pairing.
