Stolberg-Stolberg was one of several subdivisions of the fragmented Stolberg comital holdings, formally partitioned among family branches in 1706 after decades of disputed inheritance. Frederick Botho and Charles Louis ruled jointly as co-counts — a governance arrangement common to the German states but one that routinely complicated coinage authorization, as both rulers' names required inclusion on issues. The Mariengroschen denomination itself was a North German accounting unit with deep roots in the Brunswick-Lüneburg monetary system, and Stolberg's continued use of it in 1766 reflects persistent regional monetary conservatism well into the late Holy Roman period.
