Additional information

Ernest August of Brunswick-Lüneburg spent much of his reign maneuvering for electoral dignity, which he finally secured in 1692 when Emperor Leopold I elevated Hanover to the status of a ninth electorate — a decision that outraged the existing electors and triggered years of diplomatic conflict. This coinage spans precisely the years following that elevation, making it part of the first issues produced under his new electoral rank. He died in 1698, the same year this type ceased production.
