Wolfgang Wilhelm converted to Catholicism in 1613 to secure his inheritance of Palatinate-Neuburg, a move that realigned the duchy politically and drew it into the volatile confessional conflicts of the early Thirty Years' War. This 24 Kreuzer belongs to the Kipper und Wipper period — roughly 1619–1623 — when dozens of German states debased their coinage aggressively, flooding the Holy Roman Empire with underweight silver to profit before neighboring territories could refuse the coins. Wolfgang Wilhelm was among the more enthusiastic participants.
