Issued jointly in 1621 by the five ruling princes of Anhalt under the partition system that had fragmented the principality since 1603, this coin belongs to the inflationary Kipper und Wipperzeit — the currency crisis that convulsed the Holy Roman Empire between roughly 1619 and 1623. Minters across German territories systematically debased silver coinage to exploit fixed exchange rates, flooding circulation with underweight issues before the inevitable collapse. Anhalt was no exception.
The five-prince joint coinage was an administrative necessity, not a symbol of unity. The brothers ruled separate lines — Dessau, Bernburg, Zerbst, Plötzkau, and Köthen — and coordinated minting only when imperial or regional obligations demanded it.
