24 Kopecks - Elizabeth Novodel, original obverse die, large planchet

Novodels — official restrike specimens produced by the Imperial Mint for collectors and diplomats — occupy a complicated place in Russian numismatics. This particular piece uses the original 1758 obverse die, which distinguishes it from later novodel strikes that employed substitute or reworked dies, and the large planchet format places it among the more desirable of the type. The 24 kopeck denomination itself had a short run under Elizabeth Petrovna, introduced as part of an attempt to rationalize the silver coinage structure that was never fully resolved before her death in 1762.
