Lystra was a military colony founded by Augustus around 6 BC in the rugged interior of Galatia — part of his broader strategy of anchoring Roman control across Anatolia through veteran settlements. The colony's full title, Colonia Iulia Felix Gemina Lustra, embedded in this coin's legend, records a twinned foundation or augmentation, the "Gemina" designation suggesting a pairing of two veteran cohorts settled there simultaneously. Provincial bronze of this type circulated almost exclusively within the colony itself, functioning as small change in a community that had no access to the nearest Roman mint at Syrian Antioch.
