Tarsos, the principal city of Cilicia, operated its civic bronze coinage through a period of successive overlords — Seleucid, then briefly Armenian under Tigranes, then absorbed into the Roman province of Cilicia after Pompey's reorganization of the east in 64 BC. This particular reference range spans that entire turbulent stretch, meaning the precise political moment of striking matters considerably for attribution.
