| Beschrijving voorzijde | Crowned rectangular countermark applied by royal decree (Alvará) of 12 April 1668, under the authority of Prince Pedro (later Pedro II), displaying the denomination '2200' in raised numerals within a rectangular punch surmounted by a crown. The countermark was struck over the obverse of earlier hammered gold coins — principally 2 Cruzados or 1/2 Moeda pieces — revaluing them to 2200 Réis. The underlying host coin design remains partially visible beneath the applied punch. The field surrounding the countermark retains elements of the original coin's imagery depending on the host issue. |
