The 22 livres of Martinique occupies an unusual niche in French colonial monetary history. Britain occupied the island from 1794 to 1802, and again from 1809 onward — meaning the window in which this piece circulated under French authority was extraordinarily narrow. The denomination itself reflects a local accounting system that persisted in the Caribbean colonies well after metropolitan France had moved to decimal currency under the Consulate.
Pridmore 10 is a rare survivor from that brief interregnum between occupations.
