Cyrenaica passed to Rome by bequest of Ptolemy Apion in 96 BC but was left largely unadministrated for decades, governed only loosely until formally organized as a province in 74 BC. Quaestors — junior magistrates managing provincial finances — occasionally struck bronze for local circulation, and this issue is among the very few attributable to that administrative tier in the region. The name ΡΟΥΦΟϹ identifies the quaestor responsible, though no external source firmly ties this Rufus to a known individual in the late Republican cursus honorum.
