Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi governed Salzburg as Archbishop from 1560 until his death in 1586, presiding over a diocese caught between the pressures of the Counter-Reformation and the lingering fractures left by the Peasants' War of 1525. The 2½ Thaler denomination itself is a deliberate statement of fiscal weight — struck not for ordinary commerce but almost certainly for presentation or treasury use, where multiples of the Thaler served as portable concentrated wealth rather than circulating currency.
Zöttl 595 is among the scarcer multiples from this reign.
