The central figure is encircled by a wreath of fourteen heraldic shields of the chapter canons, surmounted at the top by a crowned double coat of arms flanked by two armorial shields. The circular Latin legend reads CORONA CANONICORUM ECCLESIAE METROPOLITANAE SALISBURGENSIS with the date MDCCLXXII, the name SANCTUS RUPERTUS flanking the figure in the inner field, and the engraver's initials F.M. at the base. |

Sede Vacante issues were struck by cathedral chapters during the vacancy between an archbishop's death and the installation of his successor — a period in which the chapter held governing authority and exercised the right to coin money as proof of that jurisdiction. This piece was prompted by the death of Sigismund III von Schrattenbach in December 1771, after a reign of over two decades. The chapter wasted little time; Hieronymus von Colloredo — later notorious as Mozart's overbearing employer — was elected in March 1772.
