Brunswick-Lüneburg issued this small gold piece during George IV's tenure as Prince Regent, before his formal accession to the British throne in 1820. The denomination itself — 2½ Thaler — was an awkward fractional unit born of the post-Napoleonic currency chaos that left German states scrambling to reconcile old Reichsthaler conventions with new political realities after the Congress of Vienna reorganized the region entirely.
