Khiva's last years as an independent khanate were defined by the power struggle between Sayyid Abdullah Khan, the nominal ruler, and Junaid Khan — the Yomut Turkmen warlord who effectively controlled the khanate from 1918 onward. This coin bearing both names is a product of that uneasy dual authority, struck as Bolshevik forces were already massing on the khanate's borders. The People's Soviet Republic of Khorezm would be declared in February 1920, rendering issues like this one obsolete within months of striking.
