Lippe was among the smallest of the German principalities, and its coinage throughout the 1840s reflected the monetary fragmentation that plagued the German states before Zollverein standardization took full hold. Paul Alexander Leopold II ruled a territory of barely 120,000 inhabitants, yet maintained the sovereign prerogative to strike coin — a right jealously guarded even as Prussia steadily absorbed the monetary identity of its neighbors. The 1847 date places this piece on the eve of the revolutionary upheavals that would sweep through every German state the following year.
Billon at .375 fineness was already a marginal silver content by mid-century standards, reflecting the chronic difficulty small states faced in funding independent mints.
