Additional information

Anhalt-Bernburg's coinage in this period reflects the duchy's awkward political position within a consolidating Germany — small enough to lack meaningful monetary independence, yet still issuing under ducal authority until Alexander Charles died without heirs in 1863, at which point Bernburg was absorbed into Anhalt-Dessau. The joint coinage designation refers to the shared currency conventions of the Anhalt states rather than a true co-regency issue.

Alexander Charles suffered from severe mental illness throughout his reign and governance fell largely to appointed ministers. The 1864 terminus likely reflects continued striking from existing dies into the transition year.
