The bilingual legend SOUTH AFRICA and SUID-AFRIKA appears respectively above and below in a continuous arc around the periphery, reflecting the country's dual official languages. George VI's title on South African coinage shifted after Indian independence in 1947 stripped him of the "Emperor of India" designation, forcing a revision of the royal legend across the entire Commonwealth coinage apparatus. The abbreviated Latin titles on this short series reflect that adjustment. South Africa's own political clock was also running: the National Party's 1948 election victory set the country on a path toward the republic declared in 1961, making this among the final issues produced under the full framework of British Commonwealth monetary arrangements.
The series ran only three years before the transition to the new George VI types with revised titulature following the royal style changes of 1948.
