| Obverse description | Uncrowned, bare-headed effigy of King George VI facing left, rendered in high relief with finely detailed portraiture in the neoclassical style. The legend GEORGIVS SEXTVS REX curves around the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering. The engraver's initials HP (for Thomas Humphrey Paget) appear in small characters below the truncation of the bust. The field is smooth and deeply struck, typical of the Pretoria Mint's output for this series. |

| Reverse description | A crowned royal shield, bearing the quartered arms of South Africa, is centrally positioned and divides the date to either side. The bilingual legend SOUTH AFRICA and SUID-AFRIKA appears respectively above and below in a continuous arc around the periphery, reflecting the country's dual official languages. The denomination 2 1/2 SHILLINGS is inscribed below the shield, with the engraver's initials KG (for George Kruger Gray) also present. The overall design is heraldic and formal in character, consistent with the coinage of the Union of South Africa era. |
