ORI — Oeang Republik Indonesia — was the currency the republic printed for itself after declaring independence in 1945, in direct defiance of Dutch efforts to reimpose colonial monetary control. The Third Series (ORI III) of 1947 was produced domestically in Yogyakarta, which served as the revolutionary capital after the Dutch seized Batavia. Printing infrastructure was improvised and limited, and it shows: registration inconsistencies and ink variation are endemic to the series, not signs of mishandling by individual notes.
The Dutch military actions of 1947 severely disrupted ORI circulation in occupied territories, where Dutch-sponsored currency was forcibly substituted.
