| Obverse description | Left-facing effigy of President Sukarno wearing a traditional Indonesian peci (black velvet cap), rendered in high relief against a smooth field. The portrait is unadorned and presented in a naturalistic style typical of mid-20th century Indonesian coinage. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the circular legend PRESIDEN REPUBLIK INDONESIA arcing across the upper field and the name SUKARNO prominently positioned along the lower field, flanked by small ornamental devices. |

Irian Jaya — the western half of New Guinea — was administered by the Netherlands as Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea until 1962, when U.S.-brokered negotiations forced the Dutch to transfer control to a UN transitional authority (UNTEA). Indonesia assumed full administration in May 1963. This piece dates to that transitional moment, issued under the brief Indonesian provincial identity before the territory was fully absorbed. The KM#PN2 designation as a pattern (PN) confirms it never entered general circulation — struck as part of a proposed coinage series for the new province that was ultimately abandoned.
