| Opmerkingen |
This denomination — 2½ Rupiah — is a legacy of the Dutch colonial monetary system, where the "twee en een halve" unit had long circulated in the archipelago. Independent Indonesia retained it through the mid-1950s largely out of practical necessity: the smaller denominations were still in daily demand while the new republic's monetary infrastructure remained fragile.
By 1956, Indonesia had already experienced significant inflationary pressure following the nationalisation disputes with Dutch commercial interests. Notes of this face value were effectively eroded in purchasing power almost as soon as they were printed.
