| Reverse description | Central field bears the Arabic inscription 'Azza nasruhu' (May his victory be glorious), the honorific of Khalifa Abdullah, rendered in bold calligraphy within a lobed ornamental cartouche defined by crescent-shaped borders. Below the principal legend, the mint name 'Omdurman' (أم درمان) and the AH date 1312 are inscribed. The design is framed by a continuous beaded outer border with crescent ornaments punctuating the inner frame, consistent with Mahdist coinage conventions. Issued under Abdullah ibn Muhammad — the Khalifa who succeeded the Mahdi after the fall of Khartoum in 1885 — this coin belongs to the brief and turbulent Mahdist State coinage. The Khalifa's treasury was perpetually strained by military campaigns against Egyptian and later British forces, and Mahdist silver issues from this period frequently show debased alloy composition in practice, whatever the nominal specification.
Kitchener's campaign ended the Mahdist State at Omdurman in 1898, just three years after this piece was struck.
