Syria's small-denomination coinage of this period was issued under the Ba'athist government of Hafez al-Assad, who had seized power in the corrective movement of November 1970. The fractional qirsh denominations saw relatively heavy use in everyday transactions before inflation steadily eroded their purchasing power through the late 1970s and into the 1980s, eventually rendering them economically obsolete.
