Seborga is a small hilltop village near the French border that has claimed principality status since the 1960s, when locals rediscovered — and arguably embellished — medieval documentation suggesting the territory was never formally ceded to either Savoy or the Kingdom of Sardinia. The luigino, revived as Seborga's local currency unit, takes its name from the historical luigino struck by minor Italian states in the 17th century, which circulated widely in the Levant trade.
These modern issues are fantasy pieces with no practical monetary circulation.
