Acmonital — the stainless steel alloy developed in Fascist Italy as a nickel substitute — found a second life in postwar Turkish coinage long after its origins were forgotten by most users. Turkey adopted it for several denominations during a period when chronic inflation was already eroding the purchasing power of small coins faster than new designs could be approved.
