Additional information

The Dutch 2½ gulden denomination had been struck continuously since the nineteenth century, but by the late 1920s the Mint at Utrecht was exploring revised designs for the series. Pattern coinage of this type was produced in small numbers for official evaluation — Scholten documents several variant strikings for 1929 alone, distinguished by edge treatment, die alignment, and minor portrait differences. Few entered any circulation and most went directly to archives or official collections.

Pn125 is among the scarcer documented trial pieces from this evaluation cycle.
