De Surinaamsche Bank's 2½ Gulden provisional notes of this period were stop-gap instruments, produced because a full redesign could not be expedited quickly enough to meet circulation demands. Enschedé in Haarlem had been the bank's trusted printer for decades, and the provisional designation reflects administrative timing rather than any emergency — Suriname's colonial monetary administration moved slowly, and bridging issues like this one filled the gap between scheduled series.

The unusually square format is a direct consequence of the provisional nature of the printing order.
