The Netherlands Antilles maintained its own currency distinct from the Dutch guilder throughout the postwar autonomy period established under the 1954 Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The 2½ gulden denomination echoes the traditional Dutch rijksdaalder unit, a denomination with roots stretching back to the sixteenth century — carried into the Caribbean monetary system as a direct inheritance of that convention rather than any local economic logic.
