| Additional information |
Beatrix's investiture on April 30, 1980 followed the abdication of Queen Juliana, who stepped down after 32 years on the throne — itself a continuation of the Dutch royal tradition of voluntary abdication that Wilhelmina had established in 1948. The ceremony in Amsterdam was met with riots in the city, as squatters and housing protesters clashed with police while the investiture proceeded inside the Nieuwe Kerk.
The Netherlands does not hold coronations; monarchs are inaugurated by oath and investiture rather than crowned, which is why this coin commemorates an investiture at all.
