The Netherlands Antilles 2½ gulden denomination had an awkward existence from the start — the fractional unit was a holdover from the Dutch monetary tradition of the rijksdaalder, itself phased out in the European Netherlands by 1971. When Beatrix replaced Juliana on the obverse beginning in 1980, the change was purely dynastic in scheduling: Juliana had abdicated in April of that year after a reign marked by two serious corruption scandals involving her husband, Prince Bernhard.
Production ran only through 1985, after which the denomination was discontinued. The series has no significant die varieties on record.
