De Surinaamsche Bank operated as a semi-private colonial institution under Dutch authority, but the German occupation of the Netherlands in May 1940 severed the normal financial links between Suriname and Amsterdam overnight. Notes like this one were needed to sustain a functioning economy in a colony that was suddenly cut off from its metropolitan banking infrastructure.
The American Bank Note Company contract was a practical wartime solution — New York was accessible, Amsterdam was not. ABNC had long experience printing currency for Latin American and Caribbean clients, and their security printing standards were well-suited to the job.
The fractional 2½ denomination reflects the Dutch gulden's traditional subdivision, preserved here even under emergency wartime production conditions.
