Syria in 1941 was under Vichy French administration when the Allies — British and Free French forces — invaded in June of that year. The campaign lasted barely two months, but the disruption to supply chains and the collapse of Vichy authority created an immediate need for emergency coinage. Aluminium was the only practical metal available; wartime demand had stripped copper and nickel from civilian minting everywhere in the region.
The Free French took control of the Levant states shortly after, administering Syria through the end of the war while nominally promising independence.
