Additional information

The vineyards of Pico Island were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004, recognized specifically for the extraordinary network of dry-stone walls — thousands of kilometers of basalt currais — built by Azorean farmers over centuries to shelter vines from Atlantic winds and salt spray. The resulting Verdelho wines were prized across Europe and reportedly served at the Russian imperial court.

Portugal's 2½ euro denomination was introduced precisely for this commemorative series, with no circulation equivalent issued alongside it.
