Portugal's 2½ euro denomination was itself an innovation — introduced in 2008 specifically to anchor a bimetallic collector series on UNESCO World Heritage sites, a format no other eurozone member had used. The Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, Lisbon, received its UNESCO designation in 1983 alongside the nearby Tower of Belém, and the two were inscribed as a single property. Construction of the monastery began in 1501 under Manuel I, funded substantially by the lucrative spice trade — specifically a five percent tax levied on goods imported from Africa and India.
