| Reverse description | A full-length standing figure of Saint Thomas the Apostle is depicted in the centre of the field, rendered in flowing robes with a nimbus (halo) radiating behind his head. The saint raises his right hand in blessing and holds a long T-shaped cross or builder's square in his left hand, attributes traditionally associated with the apostle. The letters S and T flank the figure in the field, serving as additional identification symbols referencing both the saint and the island of São Tomé. The surrounding legend, inspired by the original historical escudo coinage of São Tomé, reads BI · CESSIT · INDIA · TI with a cross pattée separating the words, enclosed within a beaded border. |
