Portugal's military aviation centenary series, of which this is part, commemorates the Aeronautica Militar founded in 1914 — one of the earliest dedicated military air arms in Europe, predating many of the major powers' formal air services. The Portuguese air force flew combat missions in Africa during the colonial wars of the 1960s and 70s, a chapter the official commemorative program treats with deliberate selectivity.
The 2½ euro denomination itself is an INCM invention with no circulation role — struck purely for the collector market in base and precious metal variants simultaneously.
