João Villaret was one of the most celebrated Portuguese actors of the twentieth century, known primarily for his work in theatre and as a fadista — his voice inseparable from Lisbon's cultural identity in the mid-century decades. This coin belongs to INCM's long-running "Portugueses Notáveis" commemorative series, which has issued silver and base-metal variants of the same design simultaneously, the KM#853a designation distinguishing this sterling example from its cupronickel counterpart.
