Cante Alentejano, the polyphonic vocal tradition of Portugal's Alentejo region, was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2014 — just two years before this issue. The practice is tied specifically to the rural working communities of the region, historically sung without instrumentation during agricultural labor, and its survival through the Salazar dictatorship was itself contested, the regime having co-opted folk traditions for nationalist propaganda while simultaneously suppressing the left-wing communities where Cante remained most alive.
