Additional information

The Aureus Magnus series was a privately commissioned gold issue produced by the West German firm Prägeanstalt für Orden und Münzen in the late 1950s, intended for the collector and gift trade rather than circulation. These pieces occupy an awkward taxonomic position — struck in high-karat gold with coin-like specifications, yet without legal tender status under the Federal Republic. Eltz Castle, the subject of this piece, remained in the possession of the Eltz family continuously for over 800 years, one of the very few Rhine-region castles never destroyed during the French Revolutionary Wars campaigns of the 1790s.
