The composition closely follows the design of the Portuguese cruzado, as explicitly referenced in the legend. A two-line circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading MONETA NOVA AUREA HAMBVRGENSIS / NACH PORTUGALIS SCHROT VND KORN, attesting to the coin's weight and fineness being struck according to the Portuguese standard. The overall style is characteristic of late sixteenth-century German hammered gold coinage. |
