The portrait, engraved by George T. Morgan, is rendered in a naturalistic neoclassical style with fine detail in the hair and drapery. The circumferential legend E PLURIBUS UNUM arcs along the upper field, separated from the portrait by a plain inner border. The date 1878 appears prominently in the lower exergue.
