The State of Deseret was never formally recognized by the U.S. federal government, and its petition for statehood was denied when Congress instead organized the region as Utah Territory in 1850. These gold pieces were struck by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints using California placer gold brought overland by returning members of the Mormon Battalion — raw material that had no practical local use until Brigham Young authorized the mint on Temple Square in late 1848.
Assay quality was inconsistent. Contemporary accounts noted the coins ran slightly below stated fineness, which damaged their acceptance among non-Mormon traders.
