| Obverse description | Left-facing coronet head effigy of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, with thirteen six-pointed stars arranged around the periphery representing the original thirteen colonies, and the date positioned in the exergue below the portrait. The hair is rendered in fine detail, bound at the back, with curling locks falling to the neck. The legend and stars are separated from the central design by a plain inner field, with a beaded border at the rim. |

The Coronet Head Quarter Eagle had an unusually long and quiet life — 67 years with only minor modifications, most notably the removal of the motto "In God We Trust," which was never added to this denomination despite appearing on larger gold issues after 1866. Congress never mandated it here, and the Mint never volunteered it.
New Orleans, Charlotte, Dahlonega, and San Francisco all struck the type at various points, with the Southern branch mints closing permanently in 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War. Dahlonega and Charlotte issues from their final year are among the scarcest in the series by surviving population.
