| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of Liberty wearing a cloth cap inscribed LIBERTY across the headband, executed in high relief in the Capped Head style engraved by John Reich. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged around the periphery — seven to the right and six to the left — with a fine dentilated border encircling the entire obverse. The date appears in the lower exergual area beneath the portrait. The hair is rendered in elaborate curling locks falling behind the neck, lending the design a distinctly neoclassical character. |

The eagle's head is turned to its left (viewer's right), with an open beak. In its talons, the eagle clutches an olive branch to the left and a bundle of arrows to the right. A scroll above the eagle's head bears the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The peripheral legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs around the upper and lateral fields, while the denomination 2 1/2 D. is inscribed in the lower field beneath the eagle. A dentilated border frames the entire reverse. |
