| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse features a finely detailed depiction of a Protea flower, the national flower of South Africa, rendered in high relief at the centre of the field. The engraver's initials 'KG' appear in small characters below the floral motif, attributing the design to George Kruger Gray. The bilingual legend 'NINGIZIMU AFRIKA AFRIKA BORWA' arcs along the upper periphery in Zulu and Sotho respectively, denoting 'South Africa.'
