Colombia's 1886 copper-nickel fractional coinage was struck during one of the most turbulent constitutional moments in the country's history — the same year Rafael Núñez's government replaced the federalist Rímini Constitution with the centralist Constitution of 1886, effectively ending the United States of Colombia and creating the Republic of Colombia. This coin is therefore an accidental relic: it bears the name of a political entity that ceased to exist the very year it was minted.
The 2½ centavos denomination is an awkward fraction rarely sustained long in any monetary system, and this issue was short-lived.
