Pius VI had been locked in a protracted dispute with revolutionary France throughout the early 1790s, but 1796 brought the conflict to a crisis point — Napoleon's Italian campaign swept through the Papal Legations that year, and French troops would occupy Rome within two years. Small copper issues like this one continued to circulate through the chaos, often well after the authority that struck them had effectively ceased to function.
