Amanullah Khan struck these coins in the years immediately following his proclamation of full Afghan independence and his own assumption of the royal title in 1926 — a deliberate break from the previous amir designation. His modernization program, modeled in part on Atatürk's reforms in Turkey, extended to the monetary system, and this heavy silver issue was part of a broader effort to establish a rationalized coinage replacing the fragmented earlier series. The reign effectively collapsed within three years: tribal revolt and religious conservative backlash forced Amanullah into exile in 1929, making the entire run of his royal coinage exceptionally short-lived.
