| Beschrijving keerzijde | An upright lighted torch centered in the field, its flame rendered at the top and its shaft tapering toward the base, serving as the principal type and an appropriate emblem of Hephaestus, divine patron of fire and metallurgy. The Greek ethnic legend ΗΦΑΙϹΤΙΕΩΝ is disposed around the periphery of the reverse, identifying the issuing community of Hephaestia on the island of Lemnos. The overall composition is simple and bold, consistent with the autonomous bronze coinage of this Aegean city. The flan shows the characteristic irregularity and patination typical of hammered provincial bronzes of the early Roman Imperial era. |
